Abstract

Sodium salts of organic acids (sodium organates) and sodium carbonate are removed from sodium aluminate liquors, usually obtained from low grade alumina ores, by concentrating the solution and separating the sludge which contains the sodium organates and most of the sodium carbonate. In the Bayer process this treatment removes the substances which tend to inhibit the settling of the insoluble residues of aluminium ores. The liquor may be concentrated so as to remove the sodium carbonate and sodium organates separately, but is usually concentrated to about 350 grams/litre of caustic soda. The sludge is subsequently sintered with a material containing alumina, e.g. fresh ore or red mud residues from the alkaline digest in the Bayer process and is then leached with dilute caustic soda to obtain a sodium aluminate liquor which is recycled to the main process. Lime may be added to the sludge to prevent silicate formation during sintering.
