Abstract

1,020,538. Door closers. WILLIAM NEWMAN & SONS Ltd. Dec. 11, 1964 [Dec. 19, 1963], No. 50276/63. Heading E2M. A door closer of the overhead type in which opening the door winds up a torsion spring mounted on a spindle 2 comprises a spring loaded plunger 15 mounted on one of the control arms, 7, and which engages a lug 17 on a fixed catch member 14 when the door is open to a predetermined angle. The catch member 14 is fixed to a bracket 8 attached to the door lintel, and has two lugs 17 enabling the appliance to be used on doors hinged along either side. Closing of the door is initiated by applying a force sufficient for the plunger 15 to ride over the engaged lug 17 against the action of the loading spring 23. The catch member 14 may be angularly adjusted to vary the open position of the door.
