Abstract
Aqueous solutions of the chlorides of Mg and other metals are obtained from siliceous minerals by first finely dividing the mineral to particles - 20 mesh (Tyler). The particles are mixed and leached either at atmospheric pressure or in a sealed vessel with HCl of 25-38% by weght concentration in an amount slightly in excess of the theometrical stoichiometric requirement. The mixture is heated and agitated during the leaching to keep particles in suspension and maintained at substantially boiling temperature. The MgCl2 and other metal chlorides are separated from the insoluble silica by mechanical means (e.g. filtration). Examples relate to the separation of MgCl2 from olivine.
