Abstract
1,126,712. Beryllium chloride. BERYLLIUM METALS & CHEMICALS CORP. 3 Dec., 1965, No. 51504/65. Heading C1A. Beryllium chloride is produced by mixing BeO or an inorganic mineral containing BeO with elemental silicon or an alloy thereof in a BeO/Si weight ratio ranging from 1 : 2 to 1 : 6, and reacting the mixture with gaseous chlorine at a temperature of from 800-1600‹ C. The source of beryllium may be an ore, particles of which are sintered with the silicon or its alloy to form compacted masses, the particulate ore being finer than 200 (U.S. standard) mesh. The chlorine is preferably in stoichiometric excess with respect to the beryllium oxide in the mineral and the beryllium chloride may be produced in the gaseous state and be separated from the by-products in this form. A preferred ore is specified as beryl. Metallic beryllium may be obtained by reducing the BeCl 2 produced.
