Abstract
A method of making a steel rail comprises subjecting a steel containing: .C.0.05-0.25% .Cr.2-6% .Mo.0.1-1.0% .Mu.0-1.5% .Si.0-1.0% with optional additions of .Ni.less than 1% .Cu.less than 1% .V.less than 0.5% .Ti.less than 0.5% .Nb.less than 0.5% .B.less than 0.01% the balance, apart from incidental impurities, being iron, to a blooming rolling, gradually cooling the rolled steel, reheating the steel to a rolling temperature and rolling at this temperature then gradually cooling the rail from 500-750 DEG C. down to 150-200 DEG C. over a period of time in excess of 7 hours. After the above treatment the steel is preferably tempered at 400-800 DEG C. followed by air cooling.
