Abstract
A method of heat-treating steel containing less than 0.20% C., less than 0.50% Si, and less than 1.5% Mn, the balance being Fe and unavoidable impurities comprises quenching the steel through a range between A3 and Al of at least 100 DEG C. at a rate greater than 1 DEG C. per second and less than 10 DEG C. per second. The quench may be carried out immediately after hot-rolling or the cold steel may be heated to a temperature above A3. The steel is stated to have a high tensile strength and high notch toughness.
