Abstract
Zirconium borides (which may contain hafnium) or mixed titanium and zirconium borides are manufactured from zirconium ores that contain silica, if necessary in admixture with titanium oxide, by mixing with boric acid and carbon, forming the mixture if necessary, e.g. with a sieve kneader or granulating plate, and then reacting in an arc or resistance furnace. The boric acid may be used in amount greater than is required stoichiometrically, and the carbon in amount more or less than is required stoichiometrically. When using a resistance furnace, the reaction is carried out between 1700 DEG and 2400 DEG C. Before forming, the mixture may be dried at 150 DEG to 350 DEG C.
