An automatic filter-plate-moving apparatus in a filter press comprises pair of screw shafts 17, Fig. 1, held in parallel with a row of filter plates 11, a reversible electric motor 19 for driving the screw shafts, and a pair of reciprocating members 24 mounted on the screw shafts and provided with means for engaging and disengaging arms 12 of the filter plates, e.g. a pusher 27. In operation, rotation of the screw shafts 17 causes the members 24 to move backwards towards the end plate 37 on the rear frame 15. The pusher 27, Fig. 2, on each member 24 turns, caught on the arm 12 of the first filter plate 11, and when it has just passed the arm 12 it is turned in the opposite direction by the action of a spring 29, Fig. 3 (not shown), concentric with the screw 28, Fig. 2, of the pusher 27, so that pusher 27 gets into the gap between the said arm 12 and the adjacent arm 12 of the plate behind. Further rotary movement of the pusher 27 is prevented by a supporting piece 30, Fig. 2, loosely inserted in an opening 31 of member 24 and pressed upward by a spring. Each member 24 has a frame 44, Fig. 3 (not shown), provided with a pair of limit switches 45, so that as the rear limit switch 45 approaches the arm 12 of the first filter plate 11 the switch operates to change the direction of rotation of the reversible electric motor 19 and the members 24 go forward, taking the first plate 11 up to the other end plate 41, whereupon the front limit switch 45 operates to again reverse the motor. Hence all the plates are eventually moved up to the end plate 41. Member 24 returns past the end plate 37 and a roller 34 on a lever 33, Fig. 2, engages a beam 36, Fig. I, so that the supporting piece 30 sinks into the opening 31, and the pusher turns as shown in Fig. 5, hence permitting return of member 24 past the arms 12 of all the filter plates 11, the pusher 27 being disengaged. On the upper side of each pusher is provided a pin 39, Figs. 2 and 5, so that when the member 24 approaches the end plate 41 on the movable head 35, Fig. 1, the pin 39 knocks against a stopper 40 and the pusher 27 turns back to the operating position. The plates 11 can be returned to the filtering position by the action of a ram 43, Fig. 1. A safety switch comes into operation to stop the reversible motor 19 of the reciprocating member is brought to rest with a sudden shock, e.g. due to one of the limit switches failing to operate.
