A filter press has a reversible electrically driven carriage 11 mounted on a girder 10, which carriage carries a sprocket wheel 21 which is rotated when it contacts abutment 28 on the first plate 14 on moving from A to B in Fig. 1. The rotation of wheel 21 causes cams 26 to trip switches 29 which apply an electro-magnetic or mechanical brake 30 (Fig.3, not shown) to shaft 20 carrying sprocket wheel 21 thus preventing rotation, and which reverse the electric drive and direction of travel of carriage 11. The first plate 14 is thus entrained and moved towards position C where, when the plate comes to rest, the carriage continues in the same direction, the brake 30 being preadjusted to allow sprocket 21 to slip until the rotation of sprocket 21 caused by engagement with abutments 28 causes cams 26 to trip switches 29, thus releasing brake 30 and reversing the direction of travel of carriage 11, which returns to pick up the next tray. In an embodiment in which it is required to move more than one tray at a time, the carriage is provided with an additional third switch (34) (Fig. 2, which shows reverse side of Fig. 1, not shown) which is tripped by abutments 33 provided on certain plates only, which switch is so wired in conjunction with switches 29 that switches 29 are inoperative during travel of the carriage towards B until switch 34 is tripped, whereupon brake 30 is applied and the travel is reversed.
