Abstract
1,016,060. Flexible joints. METALASTIK Ltd. Oct. 2, 1964 [Oct. 9, 1963], No. 39827/63. Heading F2S. A flexible joint comprises an outer housing 12 an an inner bell-like element 10 which are separated by a layer 13 of rubber or the like. The outer housing is originally cylindrical and is reduced in diameter throughout its length about the layer and the ball-like element, the diameters of the end portions or portions up to a maximum of half the length of the outer housing being further reduced as by swaging to pre-compress the layer. The smallest internal diameter of the outer housing 12 is preferably less than the maximum diameter of the bell-like element 10. The layer may be moulded between the outer housing and the bell-like element and be provided with annular recesses in its end portions such that on compression of the layer, the rubber or the like fills out the recesses (Figs. 1, 2, not shown). The outer housing may be machined as at 22 after the moulding operation and before or after the swaging or the central portion of the outer housing may be of greater thickness than the ends. The ball-like element may be formed as a bell-like protuberance on or at the end of a rod member or may be provided with a central bore 11.
