The carriage 3 of a mobile elevator, comprising guide rails 2 mounted on a frame 1 provided with retractable wheels 30 and castors 29, is provided with catch gear to prevent descent of the carriage on breakage of a hoisting cable 10, which passes from an anchorage on the carriage around a pulley 9 mounted on the piston rod 8 of a hydraulic ram 7 to an anchorage 11 on the frame 1. The catch gear comprises a rack 12, secured to one of the guide rails 2, and a sliding bolt mounted on the carriage and spring-urged towards the rack. The bolt is connected to the cable 10 and is thereby held out of engagement with the rack when the cable is tensioned. The carriage is provided with an operator's platform 4, having controls, for raising and lowering of the carriage, and with a load platform 5. A frame 23, which is pivotally mounted beneath the platform 4, is adapted to actuate a micro-switch 26 to stop descent of the carriage on engaging an obstruction. As the carriage descends to its lowermost position, it engages arms, pivoted at 36 to the frame and supporting the axle of wheels 30, and pivoted arms 33, supporting the castors 29, and thereby lowers the wheels and castors and raises legs 28 of the frame 1 from the ground. In a modification, the wheels 30 are driven and the wheels 29 are steerable, controls therefor being provided on the platform 4.
