Abstract
A steel alloy for a turbine rotor consists of by weight: .C.0.1 - 0.3%, .Mn.0.4 - 1.2%, .Si.trace - 0.6%, .Ni.trace - 1.2%, .Cr.8.0 - 13.0%, .Mo.0.5 - 1.5%, .V.0.15 - 0.3%, .Nb.0.03 - 0.12%, .N.0.04 - 0.1%, and as maximum residuals: 0.025% P, 0.025% S, 0.25% Co, 0.05% Al, 0.05% Ti, 0.04% Sn, 0.25% W, with the remainder Fe, the chromium equivalent (algebraic sum of the equivalents of the austenite and ferrite promoters) being less than 10. A forging of the alloy may be austenitized by heating it uniformly from 1038 DEG C. to 1094 DEG C., then quenched e.g. in oil or water to 93 - 260 DEG C. to transform to martensite, reheated to the former range for equalizing, then tempered e.g. at 538-600 DEG C. for 12 - 48 hours, cooled below 93 DEG C. for at least 12 hours and further tempered at at least 593 DEG C. for at least 12 hours. Similar alloys are disclosed for comparison but containing 0.32% and 0.57% Nb.
