In a gas-cooled graphite moderated reactor heat exchangers are lodged with the core, inside a concrete pressure vessel, the exchangers being isolated from the core by a radiation shield. The shield 1 separates the heat exchanger and core spaces 2, 3 and is provided with passages 5 to permit the flow of coolant gas between the two. To prevent radiation streaming the passages are bent and include the ribs 6, 7 of shielding material. Vanes 8 reduce pressure loss. Layers 1a and 1b are of carbon and steel respectively. Spacing is provided between the shield and pressure vessel to allow for dimension charges. The passages 5 may be closed by the inflatable gas seals 9.
