Abstract

A flexible planographic printing-plate for imaging by means of a carbon ribbon, and particularly for printing on cheques with mag. netic ink, comprises a cellulosic sheet, a pianographic coating of a pigmented water-insoluble hydrophilic polymer and an intermediate barrier layer of a heat-curable pigmented elastomeric latex-derived hydrophobic polymer. The sheet may be paper, lightly sized and coated with a composition of casein and clay with some urea formaldehyde added. For the planographic coating a polyvinyl alcohol type adhesive, e.g. a highly hydrolysed alcohol, may be used, or hydroxy-ethyl starch, carboxy-methyl cellulose, modified starches, polyacrylic acids, and carboxy-methyl-ethyl-cellulose may be employed. The pigment may be calcium carbonate and English coating clay dispersed in water. A small amount of melamine formaldehyde solution plus a water solution of zinc acetate are also incorporated in the coating. Latices based on acrylic copolymers are suitable for the barrier layer and may be cross-linked with a reactive and thermosetting resin, e.g. urea or melamine formaldehyde, to improve the resistance to water. Other substances that may be used are styrenebutadiene latex, vinylidene chloride latex and butadiene-acrylonitrile latex. The pigment in the layer may be clay. The sheet may have a layer similar to the barrier layer on its under face to prevent curling. An indentation test for the completed plate is specified. The imaging is performed by a typewriter using a film type of ribbon of polyethylene or acetate. Specification 633,747 is referred to.
