Abstract

1,011,929. Alcohol vapour detection. T. KITAYAWA. April 19, 1963 [Aug.24, 1962], No. 15466/63. Heading G1B. A detecting agent for use in the analysis of alcoholic vapour, which discolours in the presence of alcohol vapour is prepared by adding concentrated or fuming sulphuric acid to chromic anhydride, bichromate, or mixtures thereof, this prepared reagent being adsorbed on a carrier of silica or non-alkaline glass particles, which is then dessicated. A weighed quantity of the detecting agent 4 may be packed into a glass tube 1, and held therein by suitable filling materials e.g. glass wool 2, 6 and red glass particles 3, 5 and the ends of the tube 1 may be sealed. In use a definite quantity of sample gas is collected and is passed through the tube 1 after opening its ends, alcohol vapour in the sample producing a discoloured zone 7, the length of which gives a measure of the alcohol vapour concentration in the sample. Variations in the bores of different tubes 1 may be allowed for by the use of a suitable table.
