Abstract

Nickel plating baths are improved by adding an aryl sulphonamide type compound in which the imide-H is substituted by a short aliphatic chain containing an SO3H group: formula: - <FORM:1010567/C6-C7/1> in which A are substituted or unsubstituted phenyl, bi-phenyl, naphthyl, or phenylene; R is H, OH, or halogen, sulphonic acid or methyl; n is 1-4, n1 is 0 or 1, n2 is 0, 1, or 2, and when n2 is 0, n1 is 0. Other optional additions include allyl sulphonic acid, polyalkyl amines, and N-allyl-quinaldinium bromide. Salts of Fe and Co may be added to produce alloys of these with nickel. The nickel salt may be sulphate, chloride, fluoborate, or sulphamate. Alkali metal or magnesium salts may be present if the secondary brightening agents are absent. U.S.A.
