Abstract
Nickel plating baths include two brightening agents, (1) an acetylenic aliphatic sulphate of formula <FORM:0963335/C6-C7/1> where n=0 to 3, R is H, -CH2(OC2H4)nOSO3M, -CH2OCH3, CH2SO3M, OH(C2H4O)nCH2-, -CH2 halogen; R1 and R11 may be H or alkyl, M is H, Ni, Co, Fe, Mg, Li, Na, or K, and (2) an organic S-containing compound, e.g. benzene, sulphonamide or sulphonimide. Allyl sulphonic acid or a salt thereof may also be present, to prevent hydrogen pitting. Examples of (1) include MO3SOCH2-CC-CH2OSO3M, and C2H5OCH2-CC-CH2OSO3M. A range of compounds is specified. Compounds (2) include aryl sulphonic acids and their derivatives. Nickel salts specified are sulphate, chloride, fluo-borate and sulphamate, to which sodium fluo-borate and boric acid may be added.
