Abstract

1,005,198. Packing compressible material. F. B. FISHBURNE. Sept. 24, 1962, No. 36252/62. Heading B8C. A press for packing loose, compressible material into containers, e.g. tobacco into hogsheads, comprises a power-operated plunger 7 arranged to enter a charger 14 and compress material therein, a distributer 13 for filling the charger 14, means connected with the plunger 7 for shifting the distributer 13 out of the path of the plunger during the initial movement of the plunger towards the charger 14 and into the path of the plunger during the final part of the movement of the plunger away from the charger, and means for retarding the initial movement of the plunger. The distributer 13 which rotates in a horizontal plane to distribute the material evenly is mounted on a hopper 10 which is arranged to move horizontally by means of rollers 11 engaging a track 12a. Material is delivered to the hopper 10 by an endless conveyer 15. To a horizontal shaft 16 supported by fixed members (not shown) are rigidly secured two arms 17 which are pivotally connected to a pair of links 19 which in turn are pivotally connected to members 20 on the hopper 10. Also rigidly attached to the shaft 16 are two arms 21 having cam tracks provided on their inner faces by guides 23, 24. Two tubes 25 secured to the plunger 7 carry rollers 27 which engage the cam tracks. The plunger 7 is carried by a piston rod 6 in a hydraulic cylinder 4. When the plunger 7 and the hopper 10 are in the position shown in full lines and the charger 14 is sufficiently full, fluid is admitted to the upper end of the cylinder 4 and the plunger begins its downward stroke. The tubes 25 also move downwards and the rollers 27 swing the arms 21 and hence the shaft 16 and the arms 17 until the hopper 10 has been shifted to the position shown in dotted lines. The plunger 7 continues its downward stroke, the rollers 27 escaping from the cam tracks. The plunger is raised by admitting fluid to the lower end of the cylinder 4, the rollers 27 engaging the cam tracks and returning the hopper 10 to its original position. The initial downward movement of the plunger 7 is slowed down to reduce the shock on the hoppershifting mechanism by restricting the flow of fluid (Figs. 6-9, not shown). A switch 34 is operated by the hopper 10 when in its inoperative position to enable the plunger to complete its downward stroke at normal speed. A pair of plungers and chargers are adapted to operate together. In a modification (Figs. 10, 11, not shown) the hopper is moved by a piston operated within a cylinder by a source of compressed air which is controlled by a four-way valve. The piston of the valve carries a roller which bears on a cam mounted on the tube 25.
