Cigarettes from a hopper 52, 53 collect in groups in a partitioned receptacle 42 beneath the hopper and the cigarettes of each group are simultaneously displaced axially by a ram 13 into a box-like carrier 44 carried by endless conveyer chains 45, the ram 13 and receptacle 42 being mounted on a plate 17 which is adapted to move parallel with the conveyer during the transfer. The hopper 52, 53 feeds the receptacle 42 via a number of partitions 41 pivotally mounted on shafts 38. The two outermost 37, 37, of these partitions 41 are connected by links 36, 36, 35, 34 to a cam actuated arm 32. This is timed so that when cigarettes have filled the partitions of the receptacle 42 to a depth of three cigarettes, the paritions 37, 41 are urged together to prevent further cigarettes falling down. The receptacle 42 is mounted on the plate 17 by being carried by the outer end of a member 25, the inner end of which is pivotally connected to the plate 17 at 24. The outer end of the member 25 rests on an arm 27 which is pivotally connected to the frame at one end 28 and has a follower 29 at its other end which bears on a cam 7. The timing of the latter is such that when the partitions 37,41, are in their closed position, the arm 27 is lowered so as to lower the receptacle 42 into line with the conveyer carrier 44. The ram 13 is then actuated by a cam 4 to discharge the cigarettes from the receptacle 42 into a carrier 44 as the plate 17 (carrying the ram 13 and receptacle 42) moves parallel with the conveyer under the action of a cam 5 bearing on a follower 21 of a linkage 22, 30. A stop 55 prevents the middle cigarette of the middle row being fed from the receptacle 42, so that 20 cigarettes only are located into the carrier 44. The opening 49 of the latter, through which the cigarettes pass, is widened momentarily by the action of a follower 47 on the carrier 44 engaging a cam rail 48 thereby causing the container walls to move apart and its coverplate to be lifted.
