Abstract

The invention relates to N-(hexahydrobenzyl-oxycarbonyl) - 6 - aminopenicillanic acid, its alkali metal, amine (e.g. ethyl piperidine), and propionylethythromycin salts. N - (hexahydrobenzyloxycarbonyl) - 6 - aminopenicillanic acid is produced by reacting 6-aminopenicillanic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof with a hexahydrobenzyl halogeno formate, especially the chloroformate, iu aqueous acetone. N - (hexahydrobenzyloxycarbonyl) - 6 - aminopenicillanic may be treated with (a) an amine to form the amine salt or (b) propionylerythromycin to form the propionylerythromycin salt. Propionyletythromycin salt of N-(hexahydrobenzyl oxycarbonyl) - 6 - aminopenicillanic acid has synergistic activity with respect to its component antibiotics and may be used in human or verterinary medicine for oral, parenteral, rectal or topical administration, e.g. tablet, pill, capsule, powder, syrup, elixir, mouth wash, ampoule, suppository, cream, lotion or ointment.
