Heading F4F In a pyrophoric lighter using liquefied gaseous fuel the valve controlling the fuel supply and a sparking wheel assembly for igniting the fuel are operable independently of each other. The valve, Fig. 5, comprises a burner head 2 urged downwardly by a spring 45 so that through a resilient block 37 and a member 39, a resilient block 34 is compressed, thus reducing the diameter of a hole 33 through it and comprising a wick 32 which leads fuel through the hole 33. On lifting the burner head 2 block 34 expands and block 37 is lifted thus giving free passage to fuel through hole 33 and thence to the burner head. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, the burner head is lifted by a lever 18, the end of the latter remote from the burner being pivoted to a spring-loaded operating button 15. The central portion of lever 18 is bowed and rocks on a flange 7<SP>1</SP> of a flint tube. A hole 19 in the lever provides passage for the flint tube 7. The button 15 passes through a hole 24 in a spark wheel operating member 20 pivoted at 22 and having gear teeth engaging gear-wheels 11 secured to the spark wheel 12. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), lifting of the burner head is carried out by means of an L-shaped lever pivoted to a lower corner of the fuel tank and operated through an opening in the bottom of the outer casing of the lighter.
