A smoker's lighter employing fuel gas, e.g. butane in a liquefied state under compression, comprises a casing 10 in which a container 13 for the fuel is freely suspended by the stem of a discharge valve assembly 14, the valve controlling the flow of fuel to the burner 16, a movable fingerpiece 28 mounted on the top of the casing and interconnecting means extending from the fingerpiece to depress the container and produce relative movement between the valve member and valve seating to open the valve, depression of the fingerpiece simultaneously actuating ignition striker mechanism to ignite the gas. A snuffer cap 31 may also be raised by depression of the fingerpiece. The valve consists of a stem 17 held by a clip 41 within the burner 16 and a valve member 44 held in contact with a seating 45 by the stem 17 under the action of a spring 46. The fingerpiece carries a rod 33 extending through. a guide 34 in the top 25A of the casing 10 which bears on one end of a lever 35, the other end of which is in the form of a ring engaging under a shoulder 39 on the burner valve body so that pressure on the finger piece presses the valve body 38 downwards and since the stem 17 is anchored to the top of the casing, lifts the valve member 44 against the action of the spring 46. Fuel. from the container 13 passes by means of apertures 51 in a prolongation 48 of the valve body to a throat 50 communicating with the underside of the valve member 44. A pad of paper, cottonwool or other absorbent material partly closes the throat 50 so that the fuel is absorbed thereby and escapes as gas, the degree of compression of the pad and hence the size of the flame being regulable by an adjusting screw 55.
