Abstract

The motor car has a windscreen (1) which stretches into the roof area of the vehicle, On the end (3a) of the roof panel (3) a front cross-member (4) is welded. It is in the form of an open dished panel to which the windscreen is fixed by adhesive strips (5,6) to form an enclosed hollow beam. The under side of the windscreen (1) is covered with a screen coating (7). The under side of the cross member (4) is covered by a trim strip (5), carrying a sun visor (9).

Description

The invention relates to a windshield arrangement for a motor vehicle, and in particular for a private or commercial car, with a windshield extended inwards in the plane of the roof.

A windshield arrangement of this type can be considered already known from the German patent application
M 4734 (class 63 c, 44; published on 27.06.1950). Admittedly, such a windshield configuration makes it possible to obtain favorable effects both in terms of drodynamics and of line; however and for reasons of resistance, it is difficult to produce in the form presented in the aforementioned patent application for the self-supporting structures of modern motor vehicles.

The object of the present invention is therefore to improve the arrangement for a motor vehicle of the type defined in the introduction so as to provide a construction offering satisfactory resistance.

According to the invention, this objective is achieved in that the windshield completely covers a front cross member of the roof, and - seen in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle - is assembled to this cross member by a bonded assembly, respectively in the front end part. and in the final rear part of the cross
According to an advantageous configuration of the invention, a particularly light construction method can be obtained by the fact that the roof cross member forms, at least over part of its development in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, a sheet metal shell open towards the top, which is completed by the windshield to form a closed hollow support.

The following description will make it possible to explain the object of the invention with the aid of example embodiments shown in the appended drawing. This drawing shows - in the figures. 1 and 2 a vertical section in the lon direction
gitudinal of the vehicle through the front part of the frame
of the roof of a motor vehicle, each figure
both a differently configured roof rail.

Figure 1 shows a windshield 1, which is deeply tucked into the roof area 2 of a motor vehicle not shown in more detail. On a final part 3a of a roof panel 3, a front cross member 4 of the roof is preferably fixed by welding; this cross 4 forms a sheet metal shell open upwards, which is completed by the windshield 1 -which is fixed by glued assemblies 5 and 6 in order to form a closed hollow support.

The lower side of the windshield 1 is, in the area above the roof crossmember 4, provided with a coating 7 produced by screen printing.

The lower side of the roof crossmember 4 is covered by a covering 8, which receives a sun visor 9, which can be pivoted or slid in a manner not shown.

Compared to usual configurations, the prescribed arrangement makes it possible to save in the region of the roof crossmember two layers of sheet metal, since a support composed of two half-shells is usually used, which support is covered by the panel of roof which thus constitutes a third layer.

In Figure 2, the same parts are again designated by the same reference numerals. Unlike the previous embodiment, the roof panel 3 here has an extension -3b, which together with the roof crossmember 4 in the form of a shell a separate chamber 10 which contributes to increasing the rigidity.

The saving of material is obtained here in particular at the level of the second chamber 11, which only the windshield 1 closes upwards.

The construction method according to the invention makes it possible, although the windshield extends far inside the roof, to have the front roof rail sufficiently forward so that it is possible to provide a large opening for sunroof. In addition, an optimum size wiper field can be obtained, even for vehicles fitted with a single-arm windscreen wiper, since the wiper can easily pass beyond of the upper curvature, and therefore also reach the upper corners of the visibility area.
