Abstract

Expanded polystyrene beads coated with a filler and a binder resin are converted into moulded slabs by use of a mould which has heated covers and is placed in a high frequency induction heater to generate heat within the core zones of the moulding. Used for mfr. of fire-resistant insulation slabs free from porosity. The core heat induces curing and also dilutes the expanded polystyrene beads further to close any interstitial spaces. Use of hydrophilic fillers absorbs moisture released by condensation type curing reactions. Heating of the mould walls suppresses disfigurement by surface condensation.
