Abstract

A continuous strand filter tipped cigarette making machine employs a laser to form rows of holes (55) through the continuously moving paper strip (13) which is wrapped around the filter tip end. This enables air to be drawn in to mix with the tobacco smoke as the cigarette is smoked, to reduce its harmful properties. A resonator tube (39) is connected to radiation head (41) which has two mirrors (42, 44) which divide the radiation into two beams, to pass through two lenses (43, 46) so that two rows of holes are produced. A switching system (48) controlled by a timing wheel (51) whose speed is controlled by the paper feed system operates the laser supply so that the beams are interrupted at the required speed to form the perforations.
