Abstract

Cutting rock or concrete in tunnels etc. is effected by directing a main plasma jet burner onto the rock face so that a layer of rock is melted which, together with the jet, is contacted with a second electrode which thus draws the plasma jet out over the layer of molten rock. Voltage is now applied between the electrode and the jet so as to strike an arc through the plasma so that current now flows from burner to electrode by way of the jet. The effect is to heat up the rock below the molten layer in addition to this layer and so form an incision in the rock face. The second or counter electrode should be formed by a jet of plasma directed onto the molten layer, or again should be made of graphite.
