Abstract
Water charged, pref. slightly, with solid matter, a purified by chemical settlement and clarification. The settling tank has four zones: clarified water zone; reaction zone in which the flocs form and increase in size; compression zone in which the flocs commence to impede each other; and the compaction zone. The water to be treated and the chemical agents or flocculants are introduced into the upper chamber by a central conduit which opens into the reaction zone; the clarified water overflows and is evacuated over a sill to create an ascending current in the reaction zone which entrains the solid matter from the feed through a layer of already formed flocs. Larger flocs are formed and fall into the compression zone to reach the lower compaction zone. The thickened sludge is evacuated at fixed intervals and sent back to the water feed by a diaphragm pump. A measuring-regulating system, connected to the pump, adjusts the amount withdrawn as a function of the concn. of the solids in the in-coming water so that the optimum concn. is obtd. for the most efficient running of the appts.
