Abstract
In order to improve the separating result in horizontal separators and in particular in order to achieve a high degree of selectivity with large processing loads and a small separation path, in a process for separating heterogeneous material, in particular for presorting refuse, which has been precleaned of fine materials, in a gas stream which is directed essentially horizontally, into which gas stream the material is dropped from above, the individual material components - depending on their weight and size - describe different flight paths and are separated in this way, it is proposed that the material components entering the gas stream (separation zone 3) from above have reached at least half the value of the free falling speed corresponding to their size and density. This method can be used in a device of the type of a horizontal cross-current separator having an essentially horizontally arranged housing (19) at whose one end an inlet opening for the separating gas stream which is generated by a blower (1) and enters essentially horizontally is mounted and which housing also has in the upper region a filling opening (25) for the material to be separated and which has in the lower region a plurality of discharge openings (26, 28), arranged behind one another in the direction of the separating gas stream and downstream of the filling opening (25), for the individual material components which are deflected different distances, a fall shaft (21) being present above the filling opening (25), which shaft is of such a length that the material components have reached a speed as given above when passing through the filling opening (25) or that instead of the fall shaft (21) a relatively short input shaft (20) is provided into which an acceleration device for the material components, e.g. a cellular wheel sluice (23) is installed.
