Abstract

Un procedimiento para la producción de agua potable que comprende las siguientes operaciones: (a) introducir en el agua que contiene microorganismos o cuyo contacto con microorganismos es probable, una solución acuosa de monocloramina o generar la monocloramina in situ por introducción de por lo menos una cantidad estequiométrica de cloro gaseoso en el agua para que reaccione con el amoniaco disuelto y (b) introducir en el agua una solución acuosa de peróxido de hidrógeno, realizándose las etapas (a) y (b) aproximadamente a la temperatura ambiente, simultánea o consecutivamente, en cualquier orden deseado, produciendo así un abastecimiento de agua que contiene un bactericida residual de duración relativamente larga que es capaz de actuar contra futuras incursiones de microorganismos en el agua.
