Abstract

Apparatus for making paper or other fibrous nonwoven material, the apparatus including a foam-producing vortex cell, comprising a casing provided with means for admitting air therein and a blade impeller mounted for rotation therein, adjusting the distance between the impeller and an inner surface of the casing such that the rotation of the impeller submits a liquid contained in the casing and containing a surface-acting agent to a vigorous shearing action, thereby producing a foamed liquid medium, a perforated support, means that operate to supply to one side of the support a dispersion of fibers in foamed liquid medium in said cell, means to apply suction to the opposite side of the support and means that operate monitoring the dispersion to determine the volume percentage of gas in the same during its flow to the perforated support and to offer an indication of said percentage that allows the control of the operation of the foam producing cell depending on the results obtained by the supervisory means.
