Abstract
A two-stroke internal combustion engine fed with overload air at a pressure of at least 1 bar gauge from an exhaust gas turbine driven compressor installation, characterized in that the compressor installation includes at least one group of two compressors (15, 16) connected in series with an intervening refrigerator (17) whose capacity is sufficient to allow air to enter the second compressor in the series at substantially the same temperature as that of the ambient air that is sucked into the first compressor, and because each compressor (15, 16) is powered by an exhaust gas turbine (13, 14), said turbines being arranged in series, with a first turbine connected to an exhaust gas receiver (12) in the engine, which has such a volume that the gas supplied to said first turbine during normal operation will show small fluctuations in pressure, and because the output (20) of the first turbine bina (13) is directly connected to the input of the second turbine (14) without any receiver being interposed, the arrangement being such that the energy consumption in the two compressor-turbine units is approximately the same.
