Abstract

A ship's rudder is controlled at a fast or slow speed through an electro-hydraulic system comprising a potentiometer 40, adjusted manually by a helm 5 or automatically by a gyrocompass 6, and a potentiometer 41 mechanically linked to the rudder 4. The algebraic sum of the potentiometer signals and a rate-of-turn signal also derived from the gyro compass 6 is amplified at 7 and fed to switching units 10, 11. The power supply to operate the rudder is developed by a fixed delivery pump 15 and fed through a directional pilot valve 21 and main valve 24 to the rudder actuation cylinders 2, 3. In parallel with the main valve 24 is a dump valve unit 30 which normally by-passes a portion of the fluid flow through valve 24. When the output from amplifier 7 exceeds a preset value the by-pass circuit of valve unit 30 is closed by switch circuit 11, and valve 24 is fed with the total fluid flow from pump 15, causing the rudder to be operated at a higher speed.
