Abstract

A heavy current switch has an insulating movable contact carrier 2 pivotally mounted to a supporting member 11 which also carries an operating toggle linkage 12-16, the mechanism being assembled upon the supporting member 11 before it is inserted into the casing. The supporting member 11 has a cross piece formed at its ends with grooves 40, 41 co-operating with ridges 45 in the casing and a pair of dividing walls 23, 24 formed with ridges 42, 43 co-operating with grooves in dividing walls 46, 47 of the casing. In the lower edges of walls 23, 24 are semicircular cut-outs co-operating with others in the easing to form bearings for the contact carrier 2. Movable contacts 8 are pivoted to the carrier 2 by pins 9, 14 and biased by contact pressure springs 10. Carried by pin 14 are the lower toggle links 12, 13 the upper link 18 bears on a fixed pin 20 in the supporting member 11. An operating lever 27 drops into slots in the walls 23, 24 and is attached by overcentre springs 30, 31 to the knee joint 15 of the toggle linkage. The springs serve to hold the preassembled unit together. The contacts 8 are connected by flexibles 36 to right-angled terminal plates 37, the fixed contacts being carried by similar plates 65. These plates 37, 65 have threaded holes 38 for attachment to the casing and holes 39 for bolting to bus-bars. After assembly the member 11 is inserted into the casing and retained by screws 58. A handle 79 engages projections on lever 27 and is held in place by resilient packing 82 in a lid 76 attached to the casing by hidden bolts 85. Partitions are inserted between the terminals into slots 86 and retained by pins 94. The casing contains arcchutes 71 with perforated vent plates 73.
