Abstract

Self-adherent coatings of microcrystalline linear polyamide particles serve as bonding agents for laminating structures. The microcrystalline polyamide may be produced by subjecting synthetic linear polyamides to controlled degradation by treatment with a dilute aqueous mineral acid solution and mechanically disintegrating the resultant aggregated microcrystalline material until at least 10% by weight has a particle size not exceeding 1 micron, as described in the parent Specification. The disintegrated microcrystalline polyamide forms stable dispersions and gels in liquid swelling media. Self adherent coatings of a microcrystalline polyamide are formed by applying the dispersions to the surface of a base material and evaporation or volatilization of the liquid. In Example (3) polyhexamethylene adipamide was hydrolysed in aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and distintegrated by attrition in water to obtain a smooth stable gel, and the gel was sprayed on to one surface on a sheet of chipboard, and copper foil placed over the coated surface and laminated thereto using heat and pressure (5) a regenerated cellulose sheet was provided with a coating of the polyamide dispersion as in (3), and another regenerated cellulose sheet superimposed on the coating and laminated thereto by heat and pressure (9) an aqueous gel prepared as in Example (3) the attrition being sufficient so that at least 90% of the particles had a size under 100 , was applied to a sheet of polytetrafluoroethylene, the coated sheet then being subjected to heating and pressure to bond the particles together without destroying the discrete particle structure. The porous film thus formed was then transferred to the surface of a sintered glass filter plate, and the film secured by touching spaced points with a soldering iron tip.
