Abstract

964,539. Laminating. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 10, 1962 [Dec. 13, 1961 (2)], Nos. 44671/61 and 44672/61. Heading B5N. A laminate is formed by applying particles of an organic thermoplastic material to the surface of a sheet material, melting the particles by e.g. a radiant heater to form discrete globules, and then pressing a preformed film, or a heat softened freshly extruded film, of an organic thermoplastic material on to the treated surface and chilling the resulting bonded laminate. The preformed or extruded film may be, for example polythene, polypropylene, polyvinylchloride or polyethylene terephthalate (which may be biaxially oriented) and is in the range 0.0005 inch to 0.002 inch thick. The thermoplastic powder is preferably of the same material as the film and may be a polymer thereof with a lower melting point. The sheet material may be a rough fabric, e.g. hessian, or a fine fabric, a fibrous sheet of jute or hemp, felt, paper, metal foil, or a high softening point thermoplastics film. Two suitable laminating processes are illustrated in the Figures accompanying the Provisional Specifications. In the Figure accompanying Provisional Specification 44671/61 (not shown), powder is applied to a sheet 3 by a perforated drum 4 and the powder melted by passing the sheet around a drum 1 under radiant heaters 5, the thus treated sheet being then laminated to a preformed film 7 by rolls 8, 9. In the Figure accompanying Provisional Specification 44672/61 (not shown), powder is applied to the sheet material and heated to form globules, the thus treated sheet being then bonded to a freshly extruded film between two rolls, one of which is cooled.
