Abstract

A composition comprises an unvulcanized cis-polybutadiene elastomer and a 4,41-bisphenol of the formula wherein R 1 and R 3 are the same or different and are each an alpha-branched alkyl group of 3 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group of 6 to 20 carbon atoms or an alpha-branched aralkyl group of 8 to 20 carbon atoms, and R 2 and R 4 are the same or different and are each an alkyl group of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group of 6 to 20 carbon atoms, or an aralkyl group of 7 to 20 carbon atoms. The compositions are suitably oil-extended conventional vulcanizing ingredients may be added and the composition vulcanized. The stabilizer is suitably added to solution polymerized polybutadiene (cement), followed by solvent removal (e.g. with boiling water) to form a crumb of unvulcanized rubber. Many specific stabilizers are mentioned, those preferred having R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 identical. Examples are given of the use of 4,41-bis- (2,6 - di - tert - butyl phenol), 4,41 - bis - (2,6- di - cyclohexyl phenol) 4,41 - bis - (2,6 - disec - butyl phenol), and 4,41 - bis - [2,6 - di- ([alpha]-methylbenzyl)-phenol].
