Abstract

Web-roll support apparatus comprises spacedapart pairs of support arms 16 and base arms 15, pivotally mounted on a cross-shaft 12. Fluidpressure jacks 20 are pivotally connected between the base arms 15 and support arms 16 and serve to hold the support arms 16 in position and to transmit the weight of the web-roll to the base arms 15. The base arms 15 are supported for transverse movement by the crossshaft 12 and rollers 22 engaging the ground. A pair of arms 17, also mounted on the cross-shaft 12, support an adjustable guiding roller 28. A positioner screw 30 having spaced oppositelythreaded portions 33 is mounted at each end in bearing houses 31 and 32 attached to arms 17. Yokes 34 having arms 35 extending on both sides of the base arms 15, have positioner nuts 36 engaging the threaded portions 33 of the screw 30. The positioner screw 30 is tensioned by lock nuts (50, 51, Figs. 5 and 6) within the bearing housings 31, 32. A motor 41 for rotating the screw 30 is the type of air or hydraulic motor that will stall when a web roll 11 is securely gripped by the arms 16 and will thereby positively lock the stub-shafts 18 in supporting engagement with the core 19 of the web roll 11. The cross-shaft 12 is moved transversely to register the web-roll 11, by a fluid pressure cylinder 12a under the control of web-edge sensing device (not illustrated). The base positioning arms are pivoted to an upright position (Fig. 4) when a new web roll is loaded sideways on a roller conveyer 10. The stub shafts 18 may be braked to tension the unwinding web.
