Apparatus for unwinding coils of strip comprises the combination of a pair of opposed mandrels each having end portions adapted to be presented to protrude into one of the openings of the coil to rotatably support it, means for moving at least one of the mandrels relative to the other, a disc co-operating with each of the mandrels having surfaces for engaging the opposite sides of a coil, the discs being constructed and arranged to be brought from an operative position in which the discs are rotatably supported by the mandrels and positioned so that their surfaces may be contacted by a coil, to an inoperative position, in which the discs are positioned away from the mandrels and coil and vice versa and means for moving the discs between their operative and inoperative positions. A loose coil to be unwound is transferred to the uncoiling apparatus to come into contact with shockabsorbing rollers 30 on a frame 30a, which gives against piston and cylinder means 30b, and comes to rest either on a pair of short rollers 36, Fig. 3 (not shown), if the strip is narrow or, if the strip is wide, on a pair of long rollers 37 which would then be positioned below the coil. The rollers 36 and 37 are carried by a frame 35 rocked about a horizontal shaft 38 by piston and cylinder means 41 to position the correct pair of rollers 36 or 37 to support the coil, the frame 35 being locked in the selected position by pins 43 connected to piston and cylinder assemblies 44. Piston and cylinder means 21 then move heads 15 in towards the coil so that the sides of the coil are engaged by discs 22, rotatably mounted on sleeves 23 carried by mandrels 19, supported by the heads 15 and expanded to grip the sleeves 23. The strip may then be fed from the coil to a rolling mill. To then unwind a tightly wound coil the mandrels 19 and discs 22 are retracted by the means 21, the mandrels 19 are collapsed and further retracted by the means 21 and the discs 22 are swung down and away by arms 25 rocked by piston and cylinder means 33. The coil is then positioned by a coil lift 45, Fig. 3 (not shown), raised by piston and cylinder means 46 and the mandrels 19, now without the discs 22, are moved in to enter the openings of the coil and are there expanded to grip the coil.
