Abstract
1,186,428. Winding webs. BELOIT CORP. 7 June, 1967 [5 July, 1966], No. 26313/67. Heading B8R. In a single drum web-winding machine, upper and lower link arms 15 and 16, pivoted respectively at 18 and 22, pivotally support at 20 and 23, saddles 11 which rotatably support the ends of a core 10 of the web-roll being wound. This arrangement enables the core 10 to move in a substantially straight line away from the winder drum 24 as the web-roll diameter increases. In Fig. 1, a pair of pressure arms 27 also pivoted at 22 are associated with lower link arms 16. Frictionless air springs or diaphragm operated piston devices 33 are mounted on the pressure arms 27 and have piston rods 34 connected to the lower link arms 16. These devices 33 provide a constant nip pressure between the web-roll and the winder drum 24. As the diameter of the web-roll increases, movement of the lower link arms 16 relative to the pressure arms 27 operates a micro-switch (not illustrated), which causes a pair of hydraulic cylinders 28 to pivot the pressure arms 27, thereby accommodating the increase in diameter. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 7), a uniform torque motor (71) mounted directly to a shaft (72) (i.e. the shaft 22, Fig. 1), provides a constant nip pressure, and replaces the hydraulic cylinders 28, the pressure arms 27 and the air spring devices 33 of Fig. 1. An empty core 38 is positioned within the jaws 39 of a pair of loading arms 40. With the upper and lower link arm assemblies 15 and 16 in the position shown in (Fig. 5), the loading arms 40 are rotated by rack and pinion 41, 42 to deposit the core in the saddles 11. When winding is completed, the web-roll is deposited on pick-up rails 45 pivotally mounted at 46. The rails 45 are tilted by hydraulic cylinders 50 causing the web-roll to traverse along the rails to stop 49. An arcuate brake-shoe 55 is raised by an air device 60 to brake the core of the completed web-roll, so that it can be removed by a crane or lifting device.
