Abstract
A supplemental fuel system is adapted to be operatively associated with a diesel engine having intake and exhaust systems 15 17, and comprises a source 9 of gaseous fuel, a demand regulator 31 with high and low-pressure chambers 41, 43, the gaseous fuel being normally prevented from entering the low-pressure chamber 43 by means 51 responsive to a pressure differential between the chambers, a conduit 45 connecting the low-pressure chamber to the intake system manifold and providing a passage for delivery of gaseous fuel to the intake system, a secondary conduit 63, a connecting conduit 73 and an atmospheric conduit 67 in communication with each other, an electricallyoperated valve 77 normally disposed to prevent communication between the atmosphere and the connecting conduit 73, and an electrical circuit 35 including means 83 responsive to engine load to cause said valve to connect the atmosphere with the conduit 73 and create a pressure differential between the chambers 41, 43. A diaphragm 39 is thus moved downwardly to cause an arm 55 to pivot a lever 49 and raise the means 51 to allow gaseous fuel to enter the conduit 45. A screw 60 determines the maximum fuel-flow while nozzles 75 restrict the rate of response and hence gas surges in the system. The means 83 may be a bi-metallic switch. In a modification, both conduits 63 and 73 are connected to atmosphere via the electrically-operated valve.
