Abstract

Apparatus for loading a magazine of a gun comprises a crane boom 8 extending above the magazine 6 and protruding rearwards of the gun and a hoist trolley 9 arranged for travelling along the boom for bringing forward one or more rounds 11 contained in a cassette 10 into a position above the magazine and for bringing the emptied cassette back to the rear end of the boom. The trolley is provided with a hoist with which the cassette is raised and lowered. When the cassette is raised at the rear end of the boom rollers 31 contact guide rails 32 on the boom so that as the trolley is moved forwards along the boom abutment means 28 on the cassette pass above catch arms 20 which are pivoted at 21 on the boom and held in the position shown by a ratchet (27a), Fig. 2 (not shown), engaging an abutment (29). When the abutment means 28 contact the ratchet arm (27c) the ratchet 27a is pivoted about point (26) against the spring loading (30) to release the arms 20 so that they can pivot downwards. At the same time hooks 23 engage pivot pins 24 on the cassette and as soon as the ratchet (27a) is disengaged from abutment (29) the abutment means 28 are forced against abutments (33) on the catch arms. As the cassette is lowered into the magazine the arms 20 which are coupled to the cassette guide the latter into the magazine as they pivot about point 21. After the rounds have been deposited in the magazine the cassette is raised until the rollers 31 abut rails 32 when it pivots about rollers 31 to disengage hooks 23 from pivot pins 24 and permit the ratchet (27a) to re-engage the abutment (29) when the abutment means 28 are released from engagement between lever (27c) and abutments (33). The trolley can then be moved rearwards along the boom.
