Abstract

In a process of forming a composite elastic core yarn from an elastomeric - for example spandex - yarn 11 and from one or more rovings 49, by feeding yarn 11 to the front drafting rolls 42, 43 of a spinning frame, the yarn 11 is passed around a wheel 25 to which is applied a constant magnetic drag thereby to impart a constant elongation to the yarn as it reaches rolls 42, 43. Wheel 25, of nylon and having a hysteresis ring, is rotatably mounted on a bolt. Cylindrical magnets, adjustably spaced on the bolt from the ring, cause a braking force on the wheel, the magnitude of which is independent of the speed of revolution of the wheel. Adjacent the drafting rolls, yarn 11 is guided by a wire finger 26 rigidly secured to bar 30 which is slowly traversed and which also supports trumpet guides for the rovings. The yarn path from bobbin 12 to rolls 42, 43 is preferably at least 30" long. Yarn 11 is twisted when unwound from bobbin 12 and backtwisted when wound on bobbin 59. To reduce the liveliness of the composite yarn it is subjected to a vacuum, steam is introduced therein, and then the vacuum is restored to remove excess moisture from the yarn. The rovings may be composed of wool, cotton, nylon, polyacrylonitrile, polyester, -or rayon fibres, and blends thereof.
