Abstract

A starch hydrolysing agent for use in sizing and dressing textiles comprises an admixture of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, e.g. sodium or potassium hydroxide, an aqueous suspension of aluminium hydroxide, a solution of a fatty sulphate, and a solution of ammonia or of an ammonium salt. Preferably sufficient sodium hydroxide is present to form an aluminate. A softening agent, e.g. glycerin, may be incorporated.
