State of the art:

One of the most common injuries in alpine skiing, especially among recreational athletes, is "ski thumb".

To date, no device has been invented that can effectively protect the thumb from this injury and that has been widely used by athletes.

"Ski thumb" is an injury to the ligaments that stabilize the thumb. The cause of this injury is the following reflex: when you fall, you try to catch yourself with your hands. The hands are open and the thumb is spread out. When you fall while skiing, you are usually moving forwards at a relatively fast pace. When you fall backwards, the thumb usually hits the ground at an unfavorable angle. This leads to hyperextension and, in extreme cases, the ligaments or the ligament tear. Treating the injury is expensive. If the ligaments are torn, an operation is necessary. The loss of work is considerable (6 weeks in a cast).

Problem:

As mentioned above, the cause of the injury is the thumb being spread out. If the "thumb spreading reflex" is prevented, the injury mentioned above is prevented. The device for this must be as simple and quick to use as possible.

Solution:

The following device solves the problem:

On the thumb of the ski glove, one part (approx. 8 cm long) of the

Velcro fastener sewn on (1).

On the back of the index finger of the same glove, the counterpart 1

of the Velcro fastener. See Figure 1!

Furthermore, a Velcro fastener is attached to the underside of the thumb of the glove.

Function:

If you wear the glove without using the ski poles, you can attach the Velcro strap to the underside of your thumb so that the glove is not disturbed when handling it. See Figure 2! If you want to use the device, remove the Velcro strap (1) from the Velcro strap counterpart 2, loosely grasp the ski pole handle and slide (1) over the back of your index finger 1. See Figure 3!

This Velcro connection can be made tight or loose. This is up to the user.

The Velcro connection is strong enough to prevent the abduction reflex. However, the connection will come loose if external force is applied, which could cause a wrist injury.

Benefits achieved:

The thumb's abduction reflex is prevented, thus virtually eliminating the risk of a ligament injury of the type mentioned above. This device can also be used without using the ski straps.

If this safety glove were to be widely used, the economic benefit would be considerable because it would prevent medical treatment costs and lost working hours.
