Es gibt zwar Zusatzgeräte für Staubsauger mit relativ feinen Saugdüsen, die u.a* für die Staubabsaugung von Polstermöbeln verwendbar sind· Für die Staubabsaugung von Gegenständen, die auf Regalen, Ausstellungsflächen und dergl. aufgestellt sind, sind diese Saugdüsen ungeeignet, weil der auf den Gegenständen und der Stellfläche lagernde Staub auch bei der größten einstellbaren Saugstärke nicht oder nur zum Teil abgesaugt wird. Dies ist teilweise darauf zurückzuführen, daß die Staubteilchen auf Grund elektrostatischer Kräfte haften, die durch die Sogwirkung des Luftstroms nicht überwunden werden können. Hierzu dienen die AWE, die ein- oder mehrfach über die staubbelegte Fläche geführt werden, die Staubteilchen dabei mechanisch von ihrer Lagerfläche trennen, die elektrostatischen Anziehungskräfte überwinden und die Staubteilchen in der Luft aufwirbeln. Andererseits haben die Streichelemente insgesamt eine genügende Biegesteifigkeit, damit sie nicht selbst von dem Absaugluftstrom in die Absaugöffnungen gezogen werden.
