The main aim of this article is to show to what extent social mobility weakens cultural barriers. The findings are based on the results of a study on the stratification of musical tastes conducted in Poland in 2019 on a nationwide random sample. We demonstrate that upwardly mobile individuals adapt more to their status of origin than to their new position. Our results also disconfirm hypotheses concerning the "socialization" of downwardly mobile individuals to the highbrow culture. It shows that individuals moving down are closer to the lower classes in participation in culture as compared to "stayers." The results suggest an important shift: the upwardly mobile have ceased to translate their occupational success into a more esteemed culture to gain social approval. Respectively, the skidders do not resist the status implications of downward mobility by denying failure and striving to compensate socioeconomic degradation with sharing their tastes with their status peers.

This article focuses on the stratification in viewing TV shows as a factor affecting cultural distances between social classes. Based on the research conducted in 2019 in Poland, we investigate the extent to which the patterns of watching TV series are linked to class position. The article demonstrates that viewing TV series rather weakly depends on social class membership, net of other variables taken into account. Neither the time spent in watching, nor the type or quality of TV series appear to be significantly linked to social class defined in terms of property ownership and market position. Yet, other constitutive factors of class structure such as education and cultural capital of parents turn out to be significant. As expected, the higher education of the respondents and their mothers increases the chances for watching the more ‘ambitions’ TV series, while watching the shows of lesser complexity is characteristic of the respondents with lower educational capital. In sum, our findings suggest that this type of cultural activity contributes to the reproduction of the social class distances.

The main aim of the analysis is to determine to what extent preference for specific musical genres is related to social position. The study was based on data from a survey conducted in 2019 on a random sample of Poles. The explained phenomena are six genres representing broad spectrum of musical tastes: classical music, jazz, rock, rap, pop, and disco polo. The results of the analysis indicate that the diversity of musical tastes does not come down to one dimension. Family socialization, educational level, and, in part, class position exert the highest impact not only on preferences of classical music but also on liking jazz, rock and disco polo. The class effect appears almost negligent in preference for pop and rap which lead us to general conclusion that cultural stratification does not cover all forms of activity having a selective effect. Musical preferences turn out to be extremely strongly connected with parent's cultural capital and respondents' level of education.

Our main goal in this paper is to draw from empirical data gathered within a particular recording market, Poland, to find a new criterion to distinguish independent record labels from ‘mainstream’ or ‘dependent’ ones. In-depth interviews conducted with representatives of fifty-two record labels operating in the same economic and legal conditions allow us to compare the answers provided by our respondents. We believe that analysing the development of independent record labels in a country located away from the centre of the music industry may enrich the global debate on the issue, and that our conclusions will prove interesting to scholars working in other countries.

The article examines youth musical practices as a form of cultural practice characterised as aestheticisation of everyday life. The analyses are based on a study conducted among Warsaw's adolescents as a part of a research grant from the National Science Centre (agreement number DEC-2011/01/N/HS6/00972). Analyses of empirical material show that music is omnipresent in the
everyday life of adolescents. Thanks to music devices they can stay in contact with music wherever and whenever they want. However, the musical practices
of the respondents participating in the said research are dominated by music listening; that is why this kind of activity has to be treated as the main form of aestheticisation of everyday life. Moreover, using music to maintain biographical narratives turned out to be another important cultural practice in adolescents reflexive-self project. The conclusion reached is that in order to comprehensively present the practices observed here, it is essential to look at them
in a broader socio-cultural context.

The Globalization of Popular Music: A Focus on Women in Poland, in: J. Kotarba ed., Understanding Society through Popular Music, Routledge 2017
In this article I am discussing selected aspects of globalization processes in relation to Polish popular music (especially after 1989, ie political system transition), with focus on women and womanhood and Polish popular music scene (ie woman as artist, as music scenes participants etc.). The woman and the various forms of femininity representations in Polish popular music served as a pretext to analyze some of the paradoxes of globalization.

This article uses the concept of social network markets to analyze the problem of uncertainty in the music industry. On the basis of empirical data, the article puts forward the argument that to understand the preferences of listeners, a music company must be embedded in social networks. This embeddedness has always been an asset, as is indicated by the successes of independent record companies. However, nowadays it has become easier due to the ever-widening spread of social networking sites. We demonstrate that a company that communicates with its consumers via a Facebook profile or a YouTube channel on a regular basis gains the opportunity to analyze this communication, which, along with other data obtained via the internet, can help in reaching music repertoire decisions. At the same time, these practices may lead to the infringement of recipients' privacy and the commodification of all actions undertaken by listeners online. It has been widely accepted that one of the distinguishing features of creative industries is their inability to foresee which products will become popular. Uncertainty is an inherent feature of every business activity, but in the case of cultural production, the problem is deeper. It is associated with the difficulties surrounding market research. On one hand, these difficulties arise out of the inadequacy of traditional research methods in the study of cultural products. On the other hand, these difficulties are inherent in the specific features of these products, that is, compared with other industries, in terms of product testing, a producer needs to invest a disproportionately large sum of money relative to the percentage of costs of the final release. 2 Richard Caves describes these phenomena as such: " [t]he pro-ducer's intimate knowledge of the good's production process still leaves him in the dark about whether consumers will like it: nobody knows " 3 (emphasis in original). The increasing availability of " big data " raises the question of whether the " nobody knows " principle can be overcome by the creative industries. One might question whether the availability of more data will automatically translate to a higher success ratio for the creative industries. Nonetheless, we believe that more research is necessary to understand how cultural producers make use of the information gathered on the internet. It can be assumed that

PUBLISHERS OF CLASSICAL AND ELECTRONIC MUSIC IN THE CONTEXT OF CHALLENGES POSED BY THE POLISH MUSIC MARKET: MISSION, STRATEGIES, EXPECTATIONS
This article is based on empirical data gathered during the research on Polish recording industry conducted in 2013. The paper concentrates on a part of the recording industry which specializes in classical and electronic music. The authors analyze the mission and organizational structures of labels which specialize in the aforementioned music genres. The empirical data suggest that these labels , despite operating on competitive markets, are not driven by purely market orientation. The discussion conducted in the paper suggests that these labels unwittingly contribute to the cultural policy of the state, even though most of them are not supported by the government. Consequently, the results of this study can be used to improve this policy.

In the article the author makes an attempt to describe the functions of music in youths’ everyday life. The article consists of four parts. In the first section, the main social functions of music are presented, such as integrative, aesthetic, communicational and educational. Then, the methodological framework of the author’s research is discussed (qualitative study based on in-depth interviews, accompanied by focus group interviews and observations). The third part of the article is devoted to the presentation of the main functions of music in the everyday life of Warsaw’s adolescents, as revealed by the research. Finally, in the last section, a conclusion is drafted that what seems particularly interesting in the results is the marginalization of the resistance and protest-oriented function of music, especially in comparison to the importance and visibility of its aesthetic function, as well as integrative and emotional ones.

Badaniami objętych zostało 50 najważniejszych producentów fonograficznych, działających w Polsce na polu każdego rodzaju muzyki: poważnej – dawnej i współczesnej, filmowej, chillout, jazzu, rocka, punk, hip-hopu, rapu, reggae, world music, folk, disco polo, muzyki elektronicznej i eksperymentalnej, alternatywnej, niezależnej i improwizowanej, piosenki aktorskiej i poezji śpiewanej.
