Europe is investing significant resources in research and technology development of 5G networks through the 5G Private Public Partnership (5G PPP). In addition to various scientific and technological topics, the effort focuses on societal and business challenges creating value with 5G networks. This white paper discusses 5G ecosystems as a prerequisite for value creation for and by the engaged stakeholders and return of investment as a potential award for the engagement. A clear identification of 5G stakeholders supports the creation and evolution of the 5G ecosystems by characterising the potential role that each actor can assume. The identified stakeholder groups include 5G industry and research organisations, vertical sectors' firms, complementor firms, as well as organisations and associations of providers and consumers active in the value network representing the interests of a larger collection of firms and organisations. Those stakeholder groups include both small and med...

This white paper analyses vertical use cases of various domains for their performance KPIs and their mapping to 5G network KPIs. The scope is to identify (based on architectural elements analysis, information flow, etc.) the potential impact on the service performance and user perceived quality. The challenge is to understand the relative influence of 5G network performance indicators to the vertical services. The KPIs mapping methodology includes three steps:
- Research on definitions and information derived from the respective 5G-PPP projects, standardisation bodies and respective alliances e.g. ITU, NGMN etc., as well as definition of use cases from 5G-PPP projects' respective.
- Identification of relevant key service KPIs and their definitions that are of importance to the respective industry.
- Mapping of selected services KPIs on the respective network KPIs that impact the operation of the architectural elements that participate in the service...

Expectations are high for 5G, as it promises many benefits and new business opportunities for all stakeholders engaged in the creation and use of future networks and services. The 5G PPP continues to invest considerable resources into researching and developing the technological side of 5G systems. A relatively recent development is the additional challenge to EU research projects to validate claims about business opportunities through business validation analysis. The challenges for business validation involve using an appropriate analytic approach, as well as the identification of the critical ingredients used for the analysis. Business validation must encompass value propositions for vertical industries, the identification of stakeholders, the emergent roles in the value system, as well as the identification and visualisation of the complex ecosystems that are expected to emerge. In the late fall of 2019, the Working Group "Visions and Societal Challenges" of 5G Infrast...

In future mobile networks, the evolution of optical transport architectures enabling the flexible, scalable interconnection of Baseband Units (BBUs) and Radio Units (RUs) with heterogeneous interfaces is a significant issue. In this paper, we propose a multi-technology hybrid transport architecture that comprises both analog and digital-Radio over Fiber (RoF) mobile network segments relying on a dynamically reconfigurable optical switching node. As a step forward, the integration of the discussed network layout into an existing mobile infrastructure is demonstrated, enabling the support of real-world services through both standard digital and Analog–Intermediate- Frequency over Fiber (A-IFoF)-based converged fiber–wireless paths. Emphasis has been placed on the implementation of a real-time A-IFoF transceiver that is employed through a single embedded fully programmable gateway array (FPGA)-based platform that serves as an Ethernet to Intermediate Frequency (IF) bridge for the trans...

Cloud environments are criticized for their volatility in performance aspects, making it extremely difficult for time- critical applications owners to perform the decisive step for migration and owners of SaaS to present performance vs cost tradeoffs to their customers when acting as IaaS customers. The aim of this work is to present an architectural approach based on which a)IaaS providers may enhance the stability and performance effectiveness of their infrastructures, through overhead modelling, runtime analysis and optimal groupings of concurrently running services, b) IaaS adopters to understand the application computational nature, investigate abstracted QoS metrics for providers ranking, minimize procurement time and selection processes, automate deployment/orchestration and monitor the maintenance of their SLA c) 3rd parties to act as independent validators of IaaS QoS features, through a constant monitoring and benchmarking process for performance and SLA evaluation.

5G networks will comprise multiple network and compute infrastructure setups at finest fragmentation consisting of multiple disaggregated pools of network, compute and storage resources. Thus, 5G shall provide the means to move from the currently strictly defined, simple, single service models of provisioning connectivity or cloud or software services separately, to more complex "service provisioning" models including a mix of infrastructure resources, network services and even applications, specifically tailored to the specific stakeholder/vertical/end-user requirements. In this context, new SLAs shall be defined along with the SLA monitoring and maintenance mechanisms to be deployed over the distributed/disaggregated 5G deployments resources. This paper provides insights on the 5G network services SLAs definition along with an SLA maintenance paradigm.

5G networks will comprise multiple, versatile infrastructures at finest granularity consisting of multiple disaggregated pools of network, compute and storage resources. To support the 5G network architectures and satisfy the access network demanding performance requirements, transport networks consisting of various converging technologies shall provide mechanisms to support deployment flexibility and scalability. The deployment of the complementary or alternative transport network technologies in real network deployments shall take into account various factors such as area specifics, technologies’ deployment feasibility, traffic/usage forecasts considering long-term services roadmaps and certainly, the implicated costs. Thus, transport network planning and dimensioning shall be tightly accompanied by the techno-economic analysis of the various deployment alternatives. This paper provides insights on the techno-economic aspects of 5G transport network technologies and its applicability on the architectural concepts of 5G-XHaul and 5G-PICTURE 5G-PPP projects.

Nowadays, energy production/distribution moves from the conventional, centralised operational framework towards more distributed/decentralised models. Such a distributed/decentralised framework for future smart energy networks based on the optimal formation of virtual micro-grids (VMGs) has been developed in the context of the VIMSEN (Virtual Microgrids for Smart Energy Networks) research project. This paper provides an overview of the VIMSEN concept while focusing on an innovative, modular gateway solution that fulfils the market players' requirements by incorporating energy management and communication services to support future smart energy network architectures.

Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are starting to investigate ways of securing their networks to defend against the significant increase of malicious attacks targeting smart mobile devices and access/core mobile networks. This increase signifies a new tendency: that of attacking the smart mobile ecosystem. In order for MNOs to be prepared to protect their networks and subscribers, they need to investigate the market and locate efficient security solutions that can be applied to their networks. However, since the market in this field is quite immature, and since new solutions are on their way, it may be proved quite beneficial for the MNOs to start setting their requirements, so that security solution vendors can take these specific requirements into consideration. The implementation of these security solutions will require significant investments from MNOs forcing them to develop new business models for offering new security services.

The intense environmental concern regarding the CO2 footprint of the energy sector entails the higher Renewable Energy Sources (RES) share in the energy mix of the global production profile. Currently, energy is produced and distributed under a centralized framework preventing small electricity producers from participating in the electricity market, unless they are part of larger energy associations, the administration of which necessitates the exploitation of new energy and ICT technologies. The VIMSEN project introduces a highly dynamic and distributed market framework, in which new market players will emerge and the current energy market ecosystem will be modified. The framework is primarily based on the concept of Virtual Micro-Grids (VMGs) and on the active participation of renewable energy prosumers. This position paper aims to analyze the VIMSEN ecosystem in a conceptual way and introduce novel market actors as well as their responsibilities that enable the implementation of beyond state-of-the-art ICT frameworks and business models in future liberalized energy markets.
