Ecoc

The present examination deals with end-blown flutes without fingers holes played as solo instruments. The flutes are used in the music cultures of the Arbore, Lango, Didinga, Madi and Acholi of Ethiopia, Uganda and the Sudan. The flute names are hindeeru, ecoc/echoich, muserule, lalipe/liri as well as mala/olikor/gbere. 

This study was initially written in German language as part of my book entitled 'Aerophone im Instrumentarium der Völker Ostafrikas' (Aerophones in East Africa). Trafo Wissenschaftsverlag,  Berlin (2009). In 2014, Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments published a shortened version of its content as an entry.

In this project, a series of short entries of aerophones found in East Africa will be made accessible to interested readers. The research on aerophones in this geographic area as well as in the entire African continent is still at its infancy. This is a first attempt to introduce the various types of aerophones in the musical traditions of East Africa.

The Photonics Group at the United States NASA Goddard Space Flight Center has been supporting the design, development, manufacturing and integration of the optical fiber subsystem on the Express Logistics Carrier for the ISS. Some lessons learned are presented.
