Contrary to an instinctive view of radio-anal. chem., it could be argued that the essential technol. area does not lie in the final counting procedure but in sepn. science. Most radio-anal. procedures revolve around the requirement to sep. the analytes of interest from the sample matrix and prep. a suitably pure source for counting. Radio-anal. chem. is almost unique in that these demanding sepns. remain rooted in the tradition of classical inorg. chem. It is our intent to apply modern sepn. science to radio-anal. chem. by use of a highly selective, immobilized ligand capable of binding the trivalent actinide ion for rapid, efficient and selective sepn. of radionuclides. Using a linear approach, we have successfully synthesized a no. of potential ligating systems based on benzene 1,3,5-tris carbonyl chloride, salicylic acid, benzene 1,3,5-tris carboxylic acid and 2-chlorocarbonylphenyl acetate. All of the systems exhibit rigidity and are functionalised with a range of amino acids through conventional coupling reaction, to provide ligands with numerous binding sites through amide, amine and carboxylate groups. In addn., a more convergent route to ligand synthesis has also been investigated. We have been able to tether the backbones to resins such as the rink amine resin via amide bond formation to provide a rapid route to a large portfolio of immobilized ligands scheme 1. Screening with gamma ray spectroscopy will allow us to identify any lead compds. [on SciFinder (R)]

An entry from the Cambridge Structural Database, the world's repository for small molecule crystal structures. The entry contains experimental data from a crystal diffraction study. The deposited dataset for this entry is freely available from the CCDC and typically includes 3D coordinates, cell parameters, space group, experimental conditions and quality measures.
