Since its beginning, the historiography of rock art involves mainly male scientists. Female researchers were just painters, drawers, assistants, travel companion, secretaries or “lovers” in field. Naturally, one of the reasons was that women were largely denied access to academic studies. With no formal training, they were left with only a supporting role. Often ignored, however, these women made a significant contribution to the discovery and documentation of rock art.
The life of Erika Trautmann (1897-1968) presents one example of a female researcher which fell into shadows despite an impressive lifetime achievement in active fieldwork. As trained rock art copyist from the Frobenius-Institute (Germany), Trautmann went to several field trips before she successfully managed to get her own expeditions – first from the Frobenius-Institute, since 1938 from the so-called “Ahnenerbe”. She was the only woman with research projects in this pseudo-scientist national-socialist society of the SS.
Her excellent political connections brought her even foreign travel possibilities during World War II. Trautmann’s and Altheim’s ideological interpretation of the petroglyphs contributed severely to National-Socialist science. After the end of the war, however, only Altheim was able to continue his career successfully, while Trautmann only received minor editorial commissions for photographic work, always depending on her partner’s academic post. Her path of life was similar to that of so many women who had to step down into the second row in favor of the returned partners.

In a park in Northern Berlin is standing a dolmen. It is not of Neolithic origin, but was later build in this place. Rumor tells there would be a Nazi archaeology background, the monument build by the Ahnenerbe or the Hitlerjugend. With a focus on local history, the origin of the monument could be discovered: the enormous capstone was bought in the early 1930 years to serve on some smaller standing stones as memorial for the fallen German soldiers of WWI. This memorial was changed into a contemporaneous artwork which today is destroyed. But the dolen, erected in the nearby park, is szanding till today and serves as ritual place of worship for neo-pagan groups, meeting point for teenagers, or highlight for walkers, joggers, and strollers. The place is worth a visit by interested historians and archaeologists. Finally, it is the only dolmen in the town of Berlin - even with its artificial background.

This article contains a summary of my magister thesis (Magisterarbeit) about the megalith graves of the region of Carnac, Quiberon and the gulf of Morbihan in Brittany (France). The megalith graves are studied concerning their actual shape, number and order of menhirs, historical changes, restaurations, burials, objects and engravings. The historical changes of their plans because of menhir removing and romantic restaurations in the 19th century shows that the actual plans don´t show the original architecture. Even the function of megalithic graves has been questioned: are there relics of cult structures around the burials? It could be shown that megalithic graves were inspite of their rich engravings and prestigious objects in Neolithic times just burial places with some ancestors worship traces while today, they fulfil more functions as focus of archaeological studies, in form of touristic focuses and as neo-pagan places of worship.
